TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Cabinet Secretary Andi Widjajanto said that the government had welcomed the House of Representative’s [DPR] plans to form a supervisory team for the National Intelligence Agency (BIN). According to Andi, the Law on Intelligence mandates the DPR Commission I to oversee the intelligence agency.
“The House of Representatives Commission I [overseeing defense affairs] has a subcommittee supervising the intelligence agency,” Andi said at the State Palace on Monday, June 15, 2015.
Andi explained that the government was still waiting for detailed accounts regarding the mechanism of the supervision to be conducted by the DPR, and that it planned to coordinate with BIN.
“Basically we welcome any effort to improve BIN’s accountability and transparency,” Andi said.
Earlier, the DPR’s Commission I revealed its plans to form a supervisory team overseeing BIN, consisting of 14 members of the DPR from each faction under Article 47 of Law Number 17/2011 on state intelligence agency, and DPR’s regulations.
