TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) assessed that President Joko Widodo or Jokowi's claim of having access to intelligence data on the inner workings of political parties was a form of abuse of power.
Muhamad Haripin, a coordinator of the BRIN Defense and Security Conflict Research Cluster, said Law No. 17 of 2011 on State Intelligence stipulates that state intelligence is the first line in the national security system.
“The president's statement should not be put aside, there must be a follow-up, especially by intelligence surveillance actors,” Haripin said in a webinar on the danger of intelligence abuse in the 2024 elections hosted by BRIN on Thursday, September 21, 2023.
Haripin said the President’s statement indicated a practice of political intelligence. “This is a form of abuse of power or at least there is an indication of misuse of intelligence for the sake of power,” he said.
Haripin explained that Law 17/2011 notes the different interests of each intelligence agency, depending on its duties and functions. “But in the president's statement, it seems that everything is focused on political parties. Well, that's certainly not in line [with the law],” he added.
On Saturday, September 16, President Jokowi claimed he had complete intelligence information on political parties including their inner workings and directions. In front of his loyal supporters, he warned the public not to choose the wrong leader in the upcoming 2024 presidential election.
