TEMPO.CO, Bekasi - Industry Minister Saleh Husin has challenged Japan-based motorcycle manufacturer PT Astra Honda Motor (AHM) to boost its motorcycle exports to 100,000 units by the end of next year. The company officially exported Tuesday 30,000 matic scooters to the Philippines.

"By calculating production capacity and human resources, I challenge them to keep increasing its [export] figure," said Saleh on Wednesday.

Saleh wants Indonesia to rise from a mere market for selling to a basis for export-oriented factories. The process must also involve local entrepreneurs, especially on spare parts. So far, the company's production capacity at its Cikarang factory has reached 1.1 million units per year.

The type of motorcycle to be exported from PT AHM is the 110 cc Honda Beat ESO. The local content reaches 98.8 percent, involving 86 local component producers.

Saleh hoped other motorcycle producers would follow suit, and that his ministry would continue stepping up exports in the automotive sector.
