TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Indonesian Ministry of Industry gears up to welcome the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). The ministry is focusing on nine of the country's top leading sectors, which are "the most strategic and able to compete in the global arena," Industry Minister Saleh Husin said last weekend.

The sectors are agro-based industries (oil palm, cocoa and rubber); fish and its processed products; textiles and textile products; footwear and leather products; furniture; the food and beverage industry; fertilizers and petrochemicals; machinery and equipment; and basic metal industries of iron and steel.

ariyadi Sukamdani, chairman of the Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo) said that the establishment the nine leading industries will make the government more focused on the business sectors with the highest the highest export contribution.

However Hariyadi reminded the government that the agribusiness sector needs the government's help in jacking up commodity prices for the international market.

That, he said, can be done by "looking for new markets, working with other producing countries, or by boosting domestic absorption," he told Tempo.
