TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama has guaranteed that the construction of the capital's mass rapid transit (MRT) project would not stymie the 60th anniversary event of the Asian Africa Conference.
He added the project would cease during the event, as keeping it operational would affect the city’s aesthetics.
Ahok said that other preparations were underway as the AAC was just around the corner, such as the repair of sidewalks and crossing bridges. As for security and traffic management, Ahok said it was part of the police's authority, except for the suspension of the city's car-free day on Sunday, April 19, 2015.
The head of traffic management at the Jakarta Transportation Agency, Yayat Sudrajat, said the planned suspension aimed at ensuring the smoothness and security of the AAC. Following the suspension, he added, Jl. Jenderal Sudirman and M.H. Thamrin would be open to public as on working days.
To compensate for the absence of the car-free day, Yayat said the Senayan and the National Monument areas would be designated to cater to people seeking to go out for an exercise when the AAC was afoot.
