TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purmana guaranteed that the river normalization program and the Ciliwung canal project would keep floods away from Kampung Pulo, Jatinegara.
Before relocating Kampung Pulo residents, Ahok explained that he had demolished 13 houses and shops in Jatinegara to prevent flooding.
"I heard a lot of curses when I demolished the shops. Now, is Jatinegara still flooded?" Ahok said on Friday, August 21, 2015.
Ahok explained that North Jakarta would be his next target after cleaning up the areas near Ciliwung River in East Jakarta. According to Ahok, all water pumps in North Jakarta must be ready when the precipitation increases and Ciliwung overflowed due to heavy rain in Bogor, West Java.
Ahok said that Jakarta would need dams in the eastern and western parts of the capital. In addition, all water canals must be free from garbage.
"I guarantee, Jakarta will be free from floods if pumps, dams and levees are working," Ahok said.
