TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) is projecting a 5.02 percent economic growth in 2014, a relatively slow one in the last five years. "In 2010 and 2013, economic growth dropped from 6.38 percent to 5.58 percent," BPS chief Suryamin said as quoted by Antara yesterday.

The growth projection was calculated using the 2014's gross domestic product (GDP) that followed 2010's base year, beginning in the fourth quarter of 2014 and covering 17 business sectors.

Aviliani, an economist with the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (Indef), said last year's economic slowdown was mainly because it was an election year, ergo minimum investments were made. "I projected the growth will improve in 2015, to around 5.2 to 5.5 percent," she told Tempo.

Finance Minister Bambang P.S. Brodjonegoro is also optimistic that the economy could grow by 5.7 percent this year, certain that public and private investments will become more effective in achieving the government's target.

In the 2015 Amended State Budget Draft, the economic growth target is set at 5.8 percent.
