TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – US-based miner Freeport Indonesia finally decides on the location of its mineral smelter. Freeport Indonesia president director Maroef Sjamsuddin said the new smelter will be built in Gresik, East Java, on an area of 60 hectares owned by PT Petrokimia Gresik.

Freeport and Petrokimia Gresik initially planned on signing the memorandum of understanding over the land-use on Thursday, January 22, but the plan was cancelled because "we have not decided on the land-use scheme; whether it we would rent or buy the land," said Maroef.

Freeport, Maroef said, promises to meet build the smelter as part of the company's commitment to comply with Law No.4/2009 on Mineral and Coal. Freeport is planning to build a copper concentrate smelting facility with an annual capacity of 2 million tons. This construction is estimated to cost US$2 billion.
