Ahok Refuses to Postpone New Minimum Wage

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama a.k.a. Ahok said the city government will not grant several companies' request to postpone the application of the new regional minimum wage. The governor even told companies refusing the new minimum wage to relocate their businesses outside Jakarta.

According to Ahok, these companies often requested for a delay every time there the minimum wage is raised. "Just move to Majalengka. It's cheaper there," the governor said yesterday.

Last month, the government of Jakarta and the Wage Council set the minimum wage for 2015 at Rp2.7 million. The increase is associated with the effects of inflation following the raised prices of subsidized fuel in December 2014.

Previously, Wage Council member Sarman Simanjorang said that 27 foreign companies, mostly from South Korea, filed am appeal to delay the 2015 minimum wage application.
