Workers Stage Protest before Jakarta City Hall Demanding Wage Hike

16 November 2023 20:53 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian Welfare Labor Confederations (KSBSI) organized a demonstration outside Jakarta City Hall, on Thursday afternoon, Nov. 16, demanding that Jakarta Acting Governor Heru Budi Hartono raise the 2014 minimum wage (UMP) by 15 percent.

“Jakarta Acting Governor, please use your conscience and courage to determine the UMP for Jakarta in 2024 and do not submit to PP 51 of 2023,” the rally’s orator said on Thursday, mentioning the Government Regulation on wages, that was perceived as detrimental to workers.

Dozens of workers dressed in red and black joined the protest. Police also deployed personnel to ensure the safety of the rally at the City Hall.

The orator said that the annual demand for a minimum wage increment in the capital city has been a recurring issue, and workers have had to take to the streets to demand an increase.

The workers assessed that the wage formulation noted in PP 51/2023 resulted in a low wage hike that will further exacerbate their misery.

“The minimum increase in the Jakarta UMP 2024 should be economic growth plus inflation multiplied by the current wage,” the orator stressed.
