TEMPO.CO, London - Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, said that he realized that he may be the last to hold the title. "It would be better that the centuries-old tradition ceased at the time of a popular Dalai Lama," he said as reported by BBC on December 17, 2014.
He also said that The Dalai Lama institution will one day be dismissed. "There is no guarantee that some stupid Dalai Lama won't [emerge], who will disgrace himself or herself," he said.
The 79 year spiritual leader previously mentioned that he might not have a successor. Whether there will be a new Dalai Lama or not would depend on the circumstances after his death and the decision of the Tibetan people. He also pointed out that the role of a Dalai Lama will no longer include political responsibilities.
Second-highest figure in the Tibetan Buddhism is the Panchen Lama, a figure that is meant to play a key role in selecting the next Dalai Lama.A young boy was named as Panchen Lama by the Dalai Lama in 1995, but China rejected the decision and appoint its own candidate.
