TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - West Kalimantan Governor Cornelis believed that Tina, a migrant worker from Siantan, North Pontianak, has a chance to be freed from the hanging execution in Malaysia because when the incident happened, Tina was still 16 years old.

“We are making efforts to release her or at least she can receive a commutation,” Cornelis said on Friday, November 21, 2014.

Cornelis also said that Tina has undergone the preliminary hearing and still has to wait for the appeal court proses at the Mahkamah Persekutuan level.

In the meantime, Sri Martini, official at the Legal Bureau of the West Kalimantan Province said that the hearing process in Malaysia is not based on the seriousness of the case.

“They have their own mechanism, so it takes a long time. Tina herself served six years in detainment after being convicted,” she said.

For the record, Tina was arrested in Malaysia for allegedly murdering her employer six years ago. Tina was then sentenced to an execution by hanging by the local court.

Sri also said that Tina’s parents allegedly did not inform the local government, as they fear being implicated in the case because their daughter worked despite her age.

At that time, Sri said, the West Kalimantan government was communicating with Tina’s legal counsel Tina to find out more about her case.

“We cannot act as the defender, but we can give inputs for her defense,” Sri added.
