TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Acting Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama said that his administration was not interested in investing in the monorail project proposed by state construction company Adhi Karya.

"I've met with representatives from Adhi Kaya, and I've made it clear that the Jakarta administration does not want to invest in the monorail project," said Basuki, also known as Ahok, at the City Hall in Central Jakarta on Thursday.

According to Ahok, the decision to reject the offer to invest was taken because the Administration did not want to use public funds to invest in mass transportation projects.

"We weren't looking to invest in such projects. That's why we're offering the chance to invest to third parties who are interested in investing their capital in the project. I believe that those who are active within the property construction sector could look into the project as a supporting investment," said Ahok.

That said, Ahok explained he had permitted Adhi Karya to proceed with their plan to construct a rail-based mass transportation system for Jakarta.

Adhi Karya has proposed to construct a monorail in one of three prospective corridors: Bekasi-Cawang, Cibubur-Cawang, or Cawang-Kuningan.

The three options were chosen as a result of a study that showed that 67 percent of congestion in the capital was caused by traffic inflows heading towards Jakarta from Cikampek, Bekasi, and Cawang, as well as from areas surrounding the Jagorawi turnpike.

According to Adhi Karya's estimates, Rp8,4 trillion in investment is required to construct the 52-kilometer monorail track for the Kuningan-Cawang-Bekasi and Cawang-Cibubur corridors.
