TEMPO.CO, Bandung – In its latest bid to alleviate the capital’s severe congestion due to illegal parking, the Jakarta administration installed parking meters on Jl. Agus Salim, or more popularly known as Jl. Sabang, on September 25.

But the West Java’s capital of Bandung seemed to be ahead of Jakarta in the newly-introduced parking system, with four parking meters already set up on Jl. Braga before those on Jl. Sabang.

Bandung Mayor Ridwan “Emil” Kamil said the implementation of the parking system went well. “The evaluation of the parking meters in Bandung is good,” he said at the Bandung City Hall on Wednesday, October 1, 2014.

However, the Bandung Institute of Technology graduate said the system was still hampered by problems from the social aspects, including human resources. According to Emil, there were still illegal parking attendants who collected money from vehicle owners despite the existence of the parking meters.

“There are still parking attendants and vehicle owners who lacked discipline. The money should be put inside the machines as opposed to being given to the parking attendants,” Bandung Transportation Agency secretary Enjang Mulyana said.

Enjang added there were also motorcycles parked on the roadside of Jl. Braga albeit the parking space was intended for cars only. “There are illegal parking mafias operating on the street,” he said.

Enjang said the Bandung administration would beef up the supervision of the street to optimize the use of the parking meters. He added the administration would give the illegal parking attendants understanding of how the parking meters work, and give them monthly salaries to ensure the operation of the parking meters.
