TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta City Council will conduct a meeting to discuss the resignation of Jakarta Governor Joko "Jokowi" Widodo on Tuesday, as reported by Antara News.
Prasetyo Edi Marsudi, the council's speaker, said that the council had to conduct such a meeting because the People's Consultative Assembly would inaugurate Jokowi as the country's seventh president, replacing President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, on October 20.
"We will manage his resignation as soon as possible," he said on Monday.
He said he had received Jokowi's resignation letter on September 28. He added that he promised that councilors would not impede Jokowi's way to the presidency.
Prasetyo, who is also an official from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), previously said that after Jokowi moved to the State Palace, Deputy Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama would automatically take up Jokowi's position and lead the city administration.
