TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The executive director of PT Pelni (Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia) Sulistyo Wimbo Hardjito has said that the state-owned shipping company is looking to expand its business to include cargo shipping. However, the plan faces serious obstacles since Pelni does not possess its own cargo ships.

"We are recently shipping 15,000 tons of cargo that belong to Krakatau Steel," said Wimbo at Pelni's office in Jakarta yesterday.

Pelni has also previously signed a cargo-shipping agreement with Semen Padang, which has yet to be realized. "The start of the contract is delayed due to the passing of Semen Padang's executive director, Munadi Arifin," said Wimbo.

Currently, Pelni is still wholly dependent on leased ships for its cargo operations. According to Wimbo, developing Pelni's cargo operations can help push Pelni back into profitability, especially that an agreement can be brokered by other state-owned enterprises to use Pelni's fleet for their cargo operations.
