TEMPO.CO, Washington, D.C - After launching airstrikes against Islamic State and the Levant (ISIL), the United States could deploy ground troops to end ISIL movement, U.S. military official said yesterday.

General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the U.S. military’s joint chief of staff said he might recommend the U.S Military to take further action against ISIL’s base in the northern city of Mosul.

"It could be very well be part of that particular mission—to provide close combat advising or accompanying for that mission," Dempsey said, as quoted by Al Jazeera.

Dempsey admitted President Obama said the U.S. would not engage ISIL in direct combat. "But he has told me as well to come back to him on a case-by-case basis," Dempsey added.

U.S. defence secretary Chuck Hagel told the Senate Armed Services Committee that Obama is planning to carry out air strikes against ISIL’s fighters and destroy their bases, command centers and logistic networks.

"This plan includes targeted actions against ISIL safe havens in Syria, including its command control, logistics capabilities and infrastructures," Hagel said.
