TEMPO.CO, South Tangerang - The number of cases of violence against children in South Tangerang, located to the south of Jakarta, has seen an increase this year, as opposed to that in 2013, according to the data from the Agency for Community Empowerment, Women's Empowerment and Family Planning (BPMPPKB) as of August 2014.

South Tangerang Mayor Airin Rachmi Diany said the city government had teamed up with Banten Province Association of Psychologists to address the issue.

"I hope the newly installed the Child Protection Task Unit will work optimally to prevent violence against children," she said earlier today.

The personnel from the Unit have disseminated the issue to parents at their children’s school during the distribution of school reports. This event also involved several psychologists.

Psychologist of Childrean Seto Mulyadi will also join the team to provide training to the staff of the South Tangerang Child Protection Task Unit.

In the meantime, Head of Women's Empowerment of the BPMPPKB Listya Windiarti said this year there were 16 cases of child abuse, with one of them involving physical violence. In other cases, two children were abandoned by their parents and 13 children suffered from sexual abuse.

In 2013, there were four cases of physical violence against children. Four cases of psychological violence against children and seven cases of sexual abuse against children were reported.
