TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In the hands of Faizal, a number of old boats is turned into colorful boats leaving the ancient impression only on their thick wooden structures. The boats steered by the paddles are also painted with flora and fauna pattern. On top of it, human statues depicting parents and children are seen sitting.
These “3D” family portrayal is entitled ‘Journey to The Unkown World” and was made by Faizal who exhibits his art works under the theme of “The World of Faizal: Revival”. The exhibition that is being held in Yogyakarta Cultural Park starting from September 6 to 18 becomes the artist’s first exhibition after 12 years of absence.
In his other work, Faizal uses antique cars Morris Ten (1951) and Ford (1950) as mediums for his creativity. The colorful painting of children, flora and fauna that is painted on the cars bodies omits the ancient impression on those two cars. The work is entitled ‘My Dream’.
Faizal also displays two-dimensional paintings on the wall. There are paintings about mass circumcisions and eating together on the dining table. He also casts politic issues on some of the paintings, all in bright and cheerful colors.
Faizal is an Indonesian visual artist who gained his fame during 1990s. He is back to mark his moment of resurrection and to greet his long-awaiting fans.
A curator Kus Indarto said the Faizal is returning with not many changes. His works are still simple and naive.
“However, there is a shift. He was very personal, but now he brings up spiritual and politic issues,” said Kus.
