TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutors have sought a 10-year jail sentence and Rp250 million in fines for inactive Banten governor Ratu Atut Chosiyah for her alleged involvement in a graft case surrounding the election of Lebak regent. According to KPK’s prosecutors, Atut deserves the sentence as she, as a governor, has failed to set an example of good and corruption-free governance.

“The defendant has hurt the justice institution by bribing former Constitutional Court (MK)chief justice Akil Mochtar,” KPK prosecutor Edy Hartoyo said on Monday, August 11, 2014 at the South Jakarta Corruption Court.

In addition to the prison sentence and the fine, Edy demanded Atut’s political rights be revoked.

Tubagus Sukatma, Atut’s lawyer, considered the demand as too severe, particularly the part of “revoking political rights because the demand was not based on the facts presented before the court.”

Ratu Atut Chosiyah was arrested for her suspected involvement in the graft-tainted election dispute case of Lebak regent at the Constitutional Court. Atut and her borther,Tubagus Chaeri Wardana, allegedly bribed former MK chief justice Akil Mochtar with Rp1 billion to rule the Amir Hamzah-Kasmin pair as the winner of the election.
