TEMPO.CO , Jakarta – NSA chief Admiral Mike Rodgers denied collecting images of US civilians using facial recognition technology. "We do not do this on some unilateral basis against US citizens,” he said.
Rodgers did admit that NSA used the technology to get more information on their intelligence targets, but he did not provide more details.
NSA spokesperson Vanee Vines said the program was designed according to US laws and regulations and aimed at tracking intelligence targets that may endanger the US and its allies.
Previously, The New York Times on Sunday published a report leaked by Edward Snowden, saying that NSA stores millions of facial images from global communication networks.
In the report, NSA is said to harvest images from various sources such as e-mail, text messages, and video conferences.
