TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Deputy Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama predicted almost 50 percent of Jakartans occupied some forbidden areas, such as riverbank, reservoir, inspection road, and under the bridges. Because of it, the Jakarta Provincial Government is planning to conduct control on some forbidden areas to reduce capital city residents, as reported by Antara News.

"We sure that if every slum areas are removed, citizens of Jakarta will decreases because averagely around 80 percent of Jakarta citizens come from outside the city," Ahok said at City Hall, Wednesday.

Ahok assessed that low cost residence rental has caused newcomers booming. Unluckily, they occupy illegal areas.

The situation is worsened by previous policy makers who provided many supporting facilities for newcomers. As the result, population in Jakarta is increasing sharply and the environment seems disorganized.

"Controlling illegal residence especially along riverbank is about to start immediately," Ahok stated.
