TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Transportation Ministry said that airlines have started to propose extra flights for mudik, an annual tradition where millions of people migrate to their hometown during Eid Al-Fitr.
"Lion Air has prepared to provide extra fights," said Transportation Ministry spokesman Julius Adravida Barata to Tempo on Tuesday, May 27, 2014.
He said extra flights would be available for 16 days, one week before and after Eid Al-Fitr. "We can add up to 20,000 seats a day," said Lion Air general affairs director Edward Sirait.
According to Edward, some of the flight routes that have the highest number of passengers include routes from and to Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Semarang.
Edward said that during last year's mudik, the number of passengers usually increases by 10 to 11 percent compared to regular days. However, he claimed that it would be difficult to predict the increase this year as the presidential election might have an effect on the aviation business.
