TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government will cooperate with the Austrian government in the development of hydro power plants in the country.
Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Minister Jero Wacik and Doris Bures, the Austrian Minister for Transportation, Innovation and Technology, have signed an MoU on the cooperation of hydro power plant technology development in Indonesia.
Jero said Austria was well-experienced in the development of hydro power plants, with 60 percent of Austrian power supplies stemming from hydro power plants.
“Hydro energy resources are abundant in Indonesia and we are developing it. They have the technology, so this cooperation is crucial,” Jero said after the signing of the MoU at the ESDM Ministry in Jakarta on Monday, May 5, 2014.
State-run electricity company PT PLN recorded that hydro power only contributed 8.7 percent to the national energy demand until the first quarter of the year. According to PLN’s data, the total capacity of electricity installed in the country until March 2014 has reached 47,788 megawatts, whereas Indonesia boasts hydro-energy potentials of 75,000 megawatts.
Jero has called on the Austrian government to realize the energy ties in the development of infrastructures for hydro power plants. “After the signing, I asked the Austrian companies not to go home, but directly form cooperation with national businessmen. I will expedite the permit process,” he said.
