Former Chief Justice: 'Death Penalty for Corruptors'

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Constitutional Court Chief Justice, Jimly Asshiddiqie, said that the corruption eradication system in Indonesia must be renewed. He proposed a death penalty for corruptors. "Imprisonment is not effective. After being freed, many convicted corruptors bear a grudge and believe that corruption eradication has some political interests," he said on Saturday.
Jimly stated the increasing corruption cases showed that neither imprisonment nor fine prevent others from being a corruptor. Therefore, he said, death penalty should be implemented. "Besides corruptors impoverishment, death penalty can pose a threat," he uttered.
However, he warned death penalty for corruptors must be associated with state officials' responsibility with high position. Jimly explained that death penalty must be imposed on corruptors with echelon I officials or above. "So that high-level officials are serious in preventing corruption in their institution," he concluded.
