TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The open-mine production of Freeport Indonesia is said to have returned to normal levels. Freeport Indonesia President Director Rozik Sutjipto said the current open-pit production has reached 140,000 tons per day.

"Thank God, the surface open-pit mining is normal, we just need to keep it to be more sustainable," Rozik said on Monday, July 1.

Following the collapse of an underground training facility in Big Gossan, Freeport's Garsberg open pit mine was closed for investigative and safety reasons. After being closed for almost a month, the mine was reopened on Saturday, June 22. According to Dede I. Suhendar, director of development and exploitation of mineral and coal, the investigation team had declared that the open pit is safe for operations.

To date, Freeport's underground mine is still closed. Rozik claimed there are neither orders nor recommendations from the government about it. "We are waiting for the report from the independent team to the Directorate General of Mining, so, we will have to wait," he said. He said that when the report is ready, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources will let them know.
