TEMPO.CO, Washington DC – A series of tornadoes, thuderstorms, and hailstorms is predicted to hit 20 percent of the United States region this June, which may resulted in a relatively long blackout. The prediction was released by the RT online news website on Wednesday, June 12.
US Authorities warned that the storms will affect 64 million residents in 10 states this month.
The fast-moving band of storms, also known as derecho, is a rare phenomenon and occurs annually in the Midwest region. Meteorologist stated that it is difficult to predict when a derecho will occur.
Nick Wiltgen, a meteorologist from the Weather Channel, said that the derecho is likely to hit US in the next couple of days.
Previously in 2012, derecho hit eleven states from Chicago to Washington DC, killing 13 people and leaving four million residents in blackout. It also caused USD $1 million infrastructure damage and killed 34 people during the post-disaster heat-wave strike.
