TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government seems to be powerless against China following the country's rejection of exports of mangosteen, snakefruit, avocado, and swallow's nest. Lobbying and pressure from the Chinese government has softened up the Indonesian government, which allowed the Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta to serve as import gateway for Chinese horticultural products.

Agriculture Minister Suswono said that the Tanjung Priok Port was opened for Chinese imports product as part of the Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) between the two countries that will be signed at the end of this year.

Analyst from the Indonesian Economics and Politics Association, Khudori, said that the plan may interfere with local fruit and vegetables businesses. China is one of the biggest importers of horticulture products. Meanwhile the Tanjung Priok Port in North Jakarta is considered to be 'too strategic' to serve as a gateway for the biggest market demands which include Jakarta, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi area.
