TEMPO.CO, Kabul – A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 5,6 Richter scale has struck the eastern part of Afghanistan on Wednesday, April 24, causing seven fatalities and injured more than 30 people. The earthquake was also felt in Kabul and Islamabad.
Provincial spokesman Ahmad Zia Abdulzai stated that six people died in Nangarhar Province, while 75 others are injured. Out of the 75 people, 40 people were treated with first aid, and the rest has to be hospitalized.
"We are still in the process of getting information from the affected areas. Among the dead are some children," Abdulzai told AFP news agency.
Earthquakes frequently hit Aghanistan, particularly in the Hindu Kush mountain range which is located near the crossing point of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. On June 2012, two earthquakes in this area resulted in a landslide which killed at least 75 people.
