TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Former president Abdurrahman Wahid has labelled the administration of President Megawati Sukarnoputri as repressive for arresting and terrorizing pro-democracy activists. The repressive acts carried out by security apparatus upon pro-democracy activists has violated the law. Wahid made these statements from his residence in Ciganjur, South Jakarta today (10/08).

Wahid has vowed to lobby the National Commission on Human Rights on these matters, particularly in relation to the arrest of 19 pro-democracy activists in Bandung. “However, let’s not compare this repressive act with those that occurred in the pas (New Order era),” Wahid said.

Wahid had received pro-democracy activists and members of a women's Koran recitation group in Depok, West Java. These activists informed him about the arrest of 19 students and laborers in Bandung, West Java. Meanwhile, the ladies, along with Nahdlatul Ulama scholars, visited Wahid to enquire about his health. After receiving his guests, Wahid left his house to make a condolence visit to pay respect to a family member who had died in a car accident.
