TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:National Police spokesperson Insp. Gen. Didi Widayadi announced that the National Police (Polri) will question the doctors who delivered their recommendations regarding President Abdurrahman Wahid’s nerve disorder to the House of Representatives (DPR) (16/5).

The summons was aimed at assessing the doctors’ medical capabilities and to investigate their reasons behind analyzing the president’s health and reporting it to the DPR. “The National Police report was based on the National Police chief’s response to the president’s statement in the media,” Didi said.

Didi said that the police will investigate whether or not the doctors’ recommendation was aimed at provoking the DPR. The National Police will follow up the report based on incoming reports and the investigation of the police themselves. “We will treat this as a regular case,” he said. He added that the report could be in form of a complaint or of a report published in newspapers.

In the investigation, the National Police will see whether the doctors’ analysis was applicable input to the DPR or could be claimed as damaging the president’s reputation.

Didi said that the police will work together with the Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI) to find out whether the doctors who delivered the recommendation to the DPR have carried out their duty in accordance with the ethics required of doctors.

According to Didi, article 134 of the Criminal Code (KUHP) bans damaging the reputation of the president and the vice president as individuals. “This means anything which deals with the president’s personal matters prior to his presidential term can not be brought up. Therefore, we will see whether this case can be discussed,” he said.
