TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Law and Human Rights Supratman Andi Agtas offered a response to Jessica Wongso's application for judicial review (PK) despite her status as an inmate on parole. Jessica was convicted of the premeditated murder of Wayan Mirna Salihin in 2016, a case that has often been referred to as the "coffee cyanide case."
"Given that Jessica is still on parole, she is still considered an inmate, which allows for legal action to be taken," Supratman explained at the State Palace in Jakarta on Monday, August 19, 2024.
Jessica Kumala Wongso, who was convicted of murdering her friend Wayan Mirna Salihin by poisoning her coffee with cyanide, was sentenced to 20 years in prison. She was released on parole after serving approximately eight years in prison, receiving remission each year.
"Every year, she always receives a pardon. As there are certain requirements and conditions to be met in order to be granted parole, this is a possibility," said Supratman.
On Sunday, August 18, 2024, Jessica Kumala Wongso was officially released on parole. In a press conference, she expressed her gratitude to the public for their prayers and support.
"It means a great deal to me, and I'm grateful to be able to survive. I'm sorry if I seem a little nervous," Jessica said with a smile in the Senayan area of Central Jakarta on Sunday.
Deddy Eduar Eka Saputra, head of the PR Working Group of the Corrections Directorate General of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, indicated that Jessica was considered to have demonstrated positive behavior based on the Prisoner Development Assessment System, which was why she was granted parole.
As part of her parole conditions, Jessica Wongso is requested to report to the East Jakarta East Class I Correctional Center until March 27, 2032.
