TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The lawyer of murder convict Jessica Wongso, Otto Hasibuan, said that he was surprised that his client had been declared free on parole by the East Jakarta Class II A Pondok Bambu Correctional Institution.

Jessica Wongso is known to have received a total remission of 58 months and 30 days. From a 20-year prison sentence for being found guilty in the premeditated murder case of Wayan Mirna Salihin in 2016, Jessica spent 8.5 years behind bars.

Otto Hasibuan said he had asked about the speedy parole of Jessica Wongso to the Pondok Bambu Women's Prison officer. “She said 'all the rules in the requirements are all fulfilled',” Otto said at a press conference in the Senayan area, Central Jakarta on Sunday, August 18, 2024.

Otto said he did not know the details of the rules. However, in general, he believes because Jessica meets the requirements of good behavior.

According to Otto, while in detention Jessica provided many benefits. For example, by teaching English and yoga to people in prison. “To the point of getting early parole,” he said.

Previously, Head of the Public Relations Working Group of the Directorate General of Corrections of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Ditjen PAS Kemenkumham) Deddy Eduar Eka Saputra said Jessica was considered to be of good behavior based on the Prisoner Development Assessment System.

“(Jessica) received a total remission of 58 months and 30 days,” he said in an official statement on Sunday.

Tempo tried to convert the amount of remission with layman's calculations. This means that the total remission obtained by the convict whose full name is Jessica Kumala Wongso is 59 months or 5 years less 1 month.
