TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi was awarded the 'Grand Collar Order of the State of Palestine', the country’s highest honor, by the Special Envoy of the Palestinian President, Riyad Al Maliki, at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Monday, August 19, 2024.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi explained that Mahmoud Abbas’ special envoy presented the award directly after a meeting with Jokowi. "This award recognizes Indonesia's unwavering support for the Palestinian struggle," said Retno on Monday.
Riyad also congratulated Indonesia on its 79th Independence Day commemoration. He said Mahmoud Abbas praised Indonesia's significant role in supporting the Palestinian people, including advocating for a ceasefire, providing humanitarian assistance, and promoting a two-state solution.
During the meeting, Jokowi reaffirmed Indonesia's commitment to supporting the Palestinian struggle. "Indonesia will continue to approach UN member states to recognize Palestine and support Palestine's full membership in the UN," added Retno.
The award symbolizes the close diplomatic ties between Indonesia and Palestine, as well as Indonesia's commitment to supporting Palestinian rights internationally.
Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, State Secretary Pratikno, and Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung accompanied Jokowi in the meeting with Riyad. Meanwhile, Riyad Al Maliki was accompanied by the Palestinian Ambassador to Indonesia Zuhair al-Shun.
