TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Communications and Information (Kominfo) Ministry planned to build a second National Data Center (PDN) in Nongsa Digital Park, a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) located in Batam, Riau Islands. Construction is expected to begin in early 2025.
“Hopefully, the construction will start early next year,” Peters Vincent, Director of PT Taman Resor Internet which manages the SEZ, said at Nongsa Digital Park on Thursday, June 27.
He revealed that four foreign investors also intend to build a data center on this exotic island. They are from Singapore, Hong Kong, China, and New Zealand.
To date, Peters said three data centers are ready or started to be constructed. They belong to the Kominfo Ministry, Hong Kong, and China. In total, nine data centers will be established on the island, and eight of them have already been confirmed.
He said that Hong Kong’s data center project is 40 percent complete and was targeted to start operating in early 2025. Meanwhile, GDS, a Shanghai-based data center developer, is also moving forward with its project, with the first phase expected to be operational in September 2024. Currently, Peters said he was discussing the equipment delivery to support the data center's operations from abroad. “We are assisted by Customs and Excise.”
As widely reported, the Head of the National Cyber and Encryption Agency (BSSN) Hinsa Siburian admitted that the PDN had been hacked using the latest type of ransomware. The attack targeted government servers managing national data across ministries, institutions, and regional governments.
“We announce that the current National Data Center incident is a cyber attack in the form of ransomware named brain cipher,” Hinsa said after a press conference at the Kominfo Ministry in Jakarta, Monday, June 24.
