Chinese Badminton Player Zhang Zhi Jie Died after Collapsing Mid Court

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sad news comes from the 2024 Asian Junior Badminton Championship which is currently taking place in Yogyakarta. Young Chinese badminton player, Zhang Zhi Jie, died, on Sunday, June 30, after collapsing on the court.

Zhang Zhi Jie was fielded in the third match when the Chinese mixed team team met Japan at GOR Among Raga, Yogyakarta in the afternoon. When the score was tied at 11-11 in the first game, Zhang Zhi Jie, who was facing Kazuma Kawano, suddenly collapsed mid court.

He was lying in the middle of the playing field and had convulsions. The medical team rushed over to provide first aid before finally taking the young Chinese man to hospital by ambulance.

After receiving intensive care at the hospital, Zhang Zhi Jie ultimately could not be helped. The 17 year old player died at 23:20 WIB (Western Indonesia Time).

Badminton Asia, PBSI, and the organizers of the 2024 Asian Junior Badminton Championships have issued a joint statement regarding the news of Zhang Zhi Jie's death.

"China's Zhang Zhi Jie, a singles player, collapsed on the court during the evening match and was rushed to hospital and died at 23:20 local time yesterday."

Zhi Jie was playing a group stage match against Japan when he collapsed and was treated by the tournament doctor and team medic. He was taken by standby ambulance in less than two minutes to the hospital.

Badminton Asia, PBSI and the Organizing Committee express their deepest condolences and condolences to Zhang's parents, family and the Chinese Badminton Association (CBA). The world of badminton has lost a talented player."

The 2024 Asian Junior Badminton Championships are scheduled to take place at GOR Among Raga, Yogyakarta on June 28-July 2 for the mixed team category. After that, the competition will continue with the fight for the individual category title which will take place on July 3 to 7, 2024.

The news that Zhang Zhi Jie is leaving forever is clearly a deep sorrow for all badminton people. India's top women's singles badminton player, Pusarla Sindhu, has also expressed her condolences over the passing of Zhang Zhi Jie.

"Truly heartbreaking news came from the Asian Junior Badminton Championships regarding the death of a young player named Zhang Zhi Jie," wrote Pusarla Sindhu via X.

“I express my deepest condolences to the Zhang family during this sad time. The world has lost an extraordinary talent.”
