TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake with a 4.8 magnitude rocked Morowali Regency, Central Sulawesi, at around 00:18 a.m. WIB (Western Indonesia Time) on Friday, May 31, 2024. Analysis by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) showed that it was triggered by Matano Fault activity in the Geresa segment.

The tectonic earthquake was centered in the sea 27 kilometers southeast of Morowali Regency. The depth of the earthquake reached 20 kilometers with coordinates of 2.74 degrees South Latitude and 122.15 degrees Longitude East.

"This earthquake does not have the potential for a tsunami. The movement mechanism is sliding or strike slip. Monitoring results up to 00:30 a.m. WIB has not shown any aftershock activity," said Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, from the statement he shared early Friday morning.

Daryono explained that the earthquake was felt by many people inside a residential building, with an intensity scale of III-IV MMI in Morowali. BMKG urged the public to remain calm and not be influenced by hoaxes about the earthquake.

Daryono also asked residents to avoid buildings that were cracked or damaged by the earthquake. "Do not enter unsafe or damaged buildings."
