TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia has received the invitation to the Global Peace Summit and is considering attending. "We have received the invitation. And we are currently reviewing whether we will attending and what will Indonesia's position be if we do attend the Summit," said Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Lalu Muhammad Iqbal at a press conference on Wednesday, May 29, 2024.

The Global Peace Summit, based on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's 10-point peace formula, will be held on June 15-16 at Burgenstock Resort in Switzerland. Switzerland will host the conference at Zelensky's request.

Zelensky first presented Ukraine's ten-point peace formula when appearing virtually at the G20 Summit in Bali, Indonesia in November 2022. The Summit aims to create a framework that supports comprehensive and lasting peace in Ukraine, which has been facing invasion since February 2022.

Zelensky's peace formula calls for, among other things, the restoration of Ukraine's territorial integrity, the withdrawal of Russian troops and a cessation of hostilities, as well as the release of thousands of Ukrainian prisoners and citizens forcibly deported to Russia.

Ukraine previously expressed hope that the Indonesian government would attend the conference. Ukrainian Ambassador to Indonesia Vasyl Hamianin said on May 6 that the Global Peace Summit would be the largest peace summit since the Second World War.

At that time, Hamianin said that his side had not received confirmation of Indonesia's attendance at the Global Peace Summit. He hoped that President Joko Widodo and Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi would consider the invite. “We still haven't received any confirmation,” he said.

On the other hand, Iqbal said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was still studying the invitation. "And in time we will announce Indonesia's decision," he said.

Zelensky had previously invited the Indonesian president-elect Prabowo Subianto to attend the Global Peace Summit when speaking on the phone to congratulate him on his electoral victory, Kyiv Independent media reported. Hamianin had uploaded on Instagram a photo of Prabowo receiving Zelensky's call, the day after the announcement of the election results by the General Election Commission (KPU).

"President Zelensky underlined fundamental importance of Indonesian participation in the inaugural Peace Summit as one of the influential global powers and contributors to the global peace and security," he wrote in the photo caption on March 21.
