TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The new moon phenomenon on July 6, 2024, has the potential to increase the maximum tidal height, which can cause coastal flooding in several Indonesian waters. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the timing for this tidal flooding potential is different in each region.
BMKG Maritime Meteorology Center chief Eko Prasetyo said that in general, tidal flooding will affect community activities around ports and coasts, such as loading and unloading activities in ports, activities in coastal settlements, as well as salt pond operations and inland fishing.
"The public is advised to always be vigilant and alert to anticipate the impact of the maximum seawater tide and to pay attention to updated maritime weather information from BMKG," Eko said in a written statement, Thursday, July 4.
Eko said flooding in North Sumatra's Belawan coast and surrounding areas could occur from July 3 to 6, based on water level monitoring data and tidal forecasts. In West Sumatra, flooding is expected to occur on July 4-8.
"For the coast of Riau Islands on the coast of Karimun, July 3-9; the coast of Dabo Singkep, July 5-9; the coast of Batam, July 7-8; the coast of Tanjung Uban, July 7-9," he said.
Eko said the potential for tidal flooding would also occur on the west and south coasts of Banten on July 3-8. For the north coast of Banten on July 4-8. "On the north coast of Central Java on July 7-13," he said.
Tidal flooding may also occur in the port of Surabaya, East Surabaya, Kalianget-Madura on July 4-9. For the north coast of Jakarta on July 3-9. Tidal flooding is also possible on the coast of Flores Island, the coast of Sumba Island, the coast of Sabu-Raijua on July 3-7; and the coast of West Kalimantan on July 6-10.
