4.1M Earthquake Jolts East Java's Tuban, Part of Bawean's 699 Aftershocks

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that a tectonic earthquake rocked the Tuban area in East Java and its surroundings on Wednesday, May 29, at 13:38:41 Western Indonesia Time (WIB).
The agency’s analysis showed that the quake was measured at a magnitude of 4.1. The epicenter was detected at 5.68 degrees south latitude and 112.52 degrees east longitude, or in the sea at a distance of 145 kilometers northeast of Tuban at a depth of 10 kilometers.
“Considering the epicenter and the hypocenter, it was a shallow quake triggered by local fault activity,” Daryono, Head of the agency’s quake and tsunami center, said in his statement on Wednesday, May 29.
The shaking was felt in the Bawean area at the intensity of II MMI. To date, there have been no reports of damage caused by the quake.
The BMKG’s monitoring results showed that this quake was the aftershock of the 6.0-magnitude Bawean earthquake, which occurred on Friday, March 22, at 11:22:45 WIB. As of 3 p.m. today, the agency had recorded at least 699 aftershocks.
