TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia has been in the emergency of online gambling. Minister of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo), Budi Arie Setiadi, appealed to all digital platform managers such as X, Telegram, Google, Meta, and TikTok to cooperate in the government's efforts against the illegal practices.

“If you don't cooperate in eradicating online gambling on your platform, then I will impose a fine of up to Rp500 million per content,” he said during a press conference via Zoom on Friday, May 24.

He claimed that most of the digital platforms have been cooperative to date. For example, Google is taking steps with AI technology to track online gambling on its platform.

However, Budi issued a stern warning to Telegram. “I'll just say it here, only Telegram is uncooperative. The platform is completely uncooperative,” he said.

The warning is addressed to internet service providers or ISPs. Budi said he would revoke the licenses of ISPs that facilitate online gambling games.

“Frankly, we already know which ISPs are facilitating online gambling. Just wait, we will shut them down. Just wait. We will announce the names of the companies and owners later,” he said.

Budi emphasized that the warning was based on the existing regulations, including Government Regulation No. 43/2023, Kominfo Ministerial Regulation No. 5/2020, and Kominfo Ministerial Regulation No. 172/2024.
