Indonesia Airport Police Foil Lobster Seeds Smuggling Attempt to Singapore, Vietnam

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Soekarno-Hatta Airport Police thwarted the smuggling attempt of 99,250 lobster seeds to Singapore and Vietnam on Sunday, May 19. The lobster larvae were packed in a suitcase.

Deputy Chief of the Airport Police Adjunct Commissioner Ronald Sipayung said the commodity was transported from warehouses in Bogor and West Java areas.

“The perpetrator took them to Soekarno Hatta Airport in a large suitcase,” Ronald said in a written release received by Tempo on Tuesday, May 21.

The police detained suspect S, 35, who is a resident of North Jakarta. He played a role in managing the operational activities, starting with the purchase, packaging, and delivery of the goods.

“S was paid Rp20 million by someone we are still pursuing,” said Ronald.

The police also named suspect M, 42, a resident of Central Jakarta as the driver. He was paid half a million rupiah to find a rental car, pick up the lobster seeds, and send them from Bogor to Soekarno-Hatta Airport.

Soekarno-Hatta Airport Police’s Chief of Criminal Investigation Unit Comr. Reza Pahlevi said investigators launched the raid based on the public reports. The potential loss caused by this smuggling case amounted to Rp5 billion.

The two suspects face a maximum prison sentence of eight years and a maximum fine of Rp1.5 billion.
