TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Education Office has banned all educational units in Jakarta from holding graduation celebrations and study tours outside schools. The decision came in the aftermath of the Putera Fajar bus crash in Ciater, West Java, which killed students from Depok on Saturday night, May 11.

"For farewells and study trips, [students] will not go anywhere, but only within their respective school environments using existing facilities," Jakarta Education Office chief Purwosusilo said on Tuesday, May 14, as quoted by Antara.

The Jakarta Education Office also issued a circular on April 30, 2024, stating that graduation activities can only be conducted within the school premises.

Purwosusilo said that holding graduation activities or outings outside the school environment could be a burden for some students' parents and pose a higher risk. He also claimed to have received many complaints from parents regarding educational units that still held farewell activities or outings outside the school environment.

"We followed up on all the complaints by calling the school principals," he said.

In addition, Purwosusilo said that educational units that still want to conduct out-of-school graduation and study trips will go through several stages of guidance and supervision from the Jakarta Education Department.

"The education sub-departments in their respective regions also carry out monitoring. We are persuasive, from the beginning we take persuasive measures, starting from not saving for end-of-year activities and so on," said Purwosusilo.

A group of students from Lingga Kencana Vocational School returned from a graduation ceremony in Bandung on May 10 and 11. There were 112 students and 28 teachers in three buses, one of which was the Trans Putera Fajar bus that crashed into a motorcycle at 6:45 p.m. on Kampung Palasari Road, Subang Regency, Cater District.

The accident killed 10 students, one teacher, and the motorcyclist.
