TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said on Tuesday that President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Elon Musk will inaugurate Starlink on the sidelines of the 10th World Water Forum in Nusa Dua, Bali.

"Elon Musk will inaugurate Starlink with the President to facilitate communication in remote areas. This will be carried out on Sunday (May 19, 2024)," he said after giving directions at the National Police Criminal Investigation Unit's Technical Working Meeting at Anvaya Resort, Kuta, Badung Regency, Bali, on Tuesday. However, Luhut didn’t explain in detail the Starlink deal between the Indonesian government and Elon Musk.

Luhut confirmed that Elon Musk would be present in Bali as one of the speakers at the 10th World Water Forum in Nusa Dua. "Elon Musk will be invited as a public speaker at the opening of the 10th World Water Forum," he said.

According to Luhut, all the agendas and locations for the water summit are ready. "The activities are going well, the President will be present, the events are ready, and there will be a groundbreaking for a mangrove reef center between the Abu Dhabi (UAE) and Indonesian governments at Kura-kura Bali," he said.

Regarding Starlink services in Indonesia, the Minister of Communication and Informatics Budi Arie Setiadi previously said that the satellite-based internet service provider would reach more areas with previous geographical challenges and were untouched by local providers. Starlink uses satellite-based technology, namely the low earth orbit (LEO) satellite.

As for Starlink's current licensing status, he said, the service has met the operational feasibility test (ULO), which means that the company already obtained a permit as a telecommunications provider in Indonesia. Budi said that Starlink would not damage the ecosystem of local internet service providers that had already operated in Indonesia.
