TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi decided to abolish the three-tiered hospitalization class system of the National Health Insurance or BPJS Kesehatan and replace it with the standard hospitalization class system (KRIS).

This decision is noted in the Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 59 of 2024 on the third amendment of Presidential Regulation No. 82 of 2018 on health insurance, dated May 8, 2024.

It is stipulated that the KRIS system will come into force in 2025. Article 103B (1) states that it will be implemented throughout Indonesia no later than June 30, 2025.

“It will be implemented comprehensively for hospitals collaborating with BPJS Kesehatan,” as quoted from a copy of the Presidential Decree.

Furthermore, Jokowi has allowed hospitals to prepare for the implementation of the new system. “Hospitals may provide some or all inpatient services based on the Standard Inpatient Classes according to the hospital's capabilities,” the new policy states.

Since last year, the government has been planning to scrap the BPJS Kesehatan class system and replace it with the KRIS system. In July 2023, Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin said the new system would prioritize convenience for the entire community.
