Indonesians in Dubai Urged to Stay Vigilant Amid Flooding, Extreme Weather

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on Indonesian citizens to stay alert and monitor the development of the situation after torrential rains caused flash flooding in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Tuesday, April 16.

The UAE witnessed its largest rainfall in 75 years, surpassing any recorded data since data collection began in 1949, according to state news agency WAM.

The government directed schools across the country to remain closed on Wednesday. All government employees were asked to work remotely on April 16 and 17 owing to the extreme weather conditions, and private offices were advised to do the same.

The severe weather also caused several flights to be delayed out of Dubai. Sky News reported that arrivals at Dubai International Airport, the world's busiest, were halted on Tuesday evening due to flooding on the tarmac.

“We urge Indonesians in Dubai to heighten vigilance and continue monitoring the situation,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a written statement on the Safe Travel website.

The government also urges Indonesian citizens who have scheduled flights to or from Dubai to immediately contact their respective airlines or travel agents for any updates.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs earlier reported that the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) in Bur Dubai had suffered a power outage due to the flooding.

“The Indonesian Consulate General operated on a limited basis and continues to accept complaints if Indonesian citizens are in need,” said Director for Protection of Indonesian Citizens, Judha Nugraha, in a short message to journalists on Wednesday.

Judha said the Indonesian Consulate General continues to monitor Indonesians in Dubai and the Northern Emirates who may be affected by the extreme weather, especially through community nodes. “So far, there are no Indonesian citizens who have become victims and/or need assistance,” he added.

The situation has improved, and the Consulate General is now fully operational, according to Judha. The Indonesian Consulate General in Dubai can be reached via the hotline number at +971563322611 or +971564170333, or through the Emergency Button on the Safe Travel application.
