TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the Indonesian Military (TNI) Information Center, Major General Nugraha Gumilar, confirmed that Navy soldiers and the Police’s Mobile Brigade (Brimob) members who were involved in the recent clash in Sorong City, Southwest Papua, on Sunday, April 14, would receive punishment as per the existing regulations.

“The personnel involved will be dealt with in accordance with applicable law,” Nugraha said in an official statement quoted on Monday, April 15.

He stressed that the clash ended peacefully. The resolution of the case was reached when Fleet III Commander Rear Admiral Hersan held a meeting with the West Papua Regional Police Chief Inspector General Jhonny Eddison Isir at the Navy Hospital or RSAL dr. Oetojo in Sorong City, on Sunday, April 14.

They apologized to each other, he added. They also extended an apology to the people of Sorong City for the clash, which was caused by a misunderstanding between the Brimob and Navy members.

Nugraha also said that both parties deeply regretted the incident as the solidarity they had maintained thus far had been damaged by irresponsible members.
