TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government stated that the U.S.-based satellite internet provider, Starlink, has started to fulfill its operating permit in the archipelago. Director General of Post and Information Technology at the Communication and Information Ministry (Kominfo), Wayan Tony Supriyanto, revealed this information.

Wayan said that Elon Musk’s company had applied for two licenses; to use VSAT technology and to operate as an Internet Service Provider (ISP).

“For the use of VSAT, they have built the hub and everything, as well as the station equipment. They have obtained the necessary permit,” Wayan said at the Kominfo Ministry’s office in Central Jakarta on Wednesday, April 3, as quoted from Antara.

As for the telecom service provider permit, Wayan said the cooperation agreement was still under process.

Once all the licensing requirements are met, Starlink will be able to provide services to the public like other telecom service providers in the country.

Wayan further explained that Starlink Indonesia would later adopt a business-to-consumer or B2C sales scheme and then discuss the operational suitability test (ULO). He estimated that Starlink would finalize this step after the Eid holidays.

As previously reported, Kominfo Minister Budi Arie Setiadi said last month that Starlink would conduct operational feasibility tests in the Indonesian State Capital or IKN in East Kalimantan.

“The Indonesian government is open to anyone who wants to provide services, especially telecommunications services. But they must certainly follow and comply with Indonesian regulations. For example, the NOC (Network Operation Center) must be located in Indonesia,” Budi Arie said on Thursday, March 21.
