TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Another earthquake centered in the Java Sea with a stronger magnitude of 6.5 jolted Tuban and its surroundings on Friday afternoon, March 22, at 15:52:58 WIB (Western Indonesian Time).

The epicenter was detected at 5.76 degrees south latitude and 112.33 degrees east longitude with a depth of 10 kilometers. “The quake does not have the potential to trigger a tsunami,” the agency confirmed.

The shaking was felt strongly in Blora, Madura, Gresik, Surabaya, and Banjar on the MMI III-IV scale, as well as in Banjarbar, Sampit, Banjarmasin, Martapura, Balikpapan, Tanah Grogot, Mojokerto, Malang, Lumajang, Madiun, Nganjuk, Pasuruan, Jepara, Rembang, Demak, Kudus, and Semarang on the MMI II-III scale.

Weaker tremors on the MMI I-II scale were felt in Pacitan, Trenggalek, Blitar, Solo, Sleman, Yogyakarta, Kulonprogo, Kebumen, and Temanggung.

As reported earlier, a quake rocked Tuban, East Java, and its surroundings, on Friday morning at 11:22 WIB. The BMKG confirmed that the shaking intensity reached the MMI IV-V scale.

Novi Dito, a resident of Tuban, said that the first quake did not cause him to panic as he was sleeping. “But this third quake caused panic, and all the villagers ran out of their houses because everything [in the house] fell,” he claimed.

Ody Sujadi, a resident of Surabaya, also said that he was quite panicked because Surabaya rarely experienced quakes, but there were three quakes today. “I was in my office on the 5th floor. When the earthquake struck, I immediately rushed to the emergency stairs to get out of the building,” he recalled.
