TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian police said 4,992 personnel would be deployed to secure the national vote-counting process until the results of the 2024 election are announced. Brig. Gen. Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko, head of the National Police's public information office, said on Monday that the troops would be made up of members of the National Police, Jakarta Metro Police and other stakeholders.

Asked about the possibility of tension during the demonstrations, Trunoyudo said the situation was safe and under control so far. According to him, this peaceful situation is the result of the cooperation of all elements of society.

He appealed to the masses planning to hold demonstrations to abide by the current regulations on public expression of opinion.

"Public expression of opinion is allowed by the constitution. But the methods are regulated by law. The national police will serve as a security corridor to provide security," he said.

Before the General Election Commission, or KPU, announces the results of the 2024 election recount on Wednesday, March 20, groups of activists plan to stage demonstrations.

One of them is a group calling itself the Joint Alliance of Students, Youth and Scholars. They plan to demonstrate in front of the DPR building in Central Jakarta on Wednesday.

The day before, the People's Sovereignty Enforcement Movement or GPKR also plans to stage a protest in front of the DPR building, as confirmed by GPKR presidium and former PP Muhammadiyah chairman Din Syamsuddin.

Today, the former commander of the Special Forces Command, retired Major General Soenarko, reportedly led a demonstration in front of the KPU building.
